Young Friends & Families

Dear Parents and Grandparents,

I am so grateful to share with you an idea becoming manifest for our youngest at Friends of Unity.  In conversation with parents, including those at the Raising Conscious Children/Family sessions, the idea of starting each month with a theme and a supplementary take-home packet has evolved. Families today can be challenged to carve out time for Sunday services, and FoU is challenged to create weekly adult support for our Young Friends program. However, we have a vision of offering support and are growing our efforts with 1st Sundays

The 1st Sunday (of each month) Anya Scarborough will present a spiritual theme for the month.  On that Sunday we will have a take-home packet for families with ideas for study and/or creativity for you to continue through the month.  Since children in attendance at FoU over the last year range have ranged in age from 3 - 18, and parents of teens prefer their children in service, our program is geared to ages 3-12.

December's theme is obvious being Christmas and the birth of Jesus.  Anya is a member at FoU, a therapist, and gifted with experience leading movement and body awareness.  December 1st she will emphasize Christmas, the reason for Christmas, and the Joy that arises when we give to others. A second adult helper will support the fun of the exciting and 'magical' activities planned.

Following the service Dec 1, Susan Hahn will offer to the congregation an opportunity to create an Advent Sculpture.  You and your child(ren) are encouraged to join. Utilizing creation as an evolutionary model for Advent, Dec 1 Sunday the sculpture will feature a rock at its base for the mineral kingdom.  2nd Sunday of Advent, Dec 7, plant kingdom items would be added. 3rd Sunday, Dec 14, animal kingdom representation is added. 4th Sunday, Dec 22 (our family Christmas candle lighting service) a picture of your family and a candle at the top to represent the spiritual flame of Christ conscious. I've added a picture to give you an idea of this creative way to presence the Advent of Christmas.

Unity's Five Basic Principles for Children

1. God is all good and active in everything, everywhere.
2. I am naturally good because Godís divinity is in me and in everyone.

3. I create my experiences by what I choose to think and what I feel and believe.

4. Through affirmative prayer and meditation, I connect with God and bring out the good in my life.

5. I do and give my best by living the truth I know. I make a difference.

Call Out the Children

By Myrtle Fillmore
Co-founder of Unity

Our mission is not to entertain the children, but to call them out. To be always entertained is to be dwarfed and dependent. To be "called out" is to follow the harmonious law of the soul's unfoldment. Who meddles with the rosebud? What fingers are deft enough to pry open that marvel of folded beauty? We are wise enough to leave it alone to follow the glad law of its own unfolding, but our children! Have we dealt as wisely with these buds of marvelous possibilities? Have we always remembered that they, too, must quicken and unfold through the innate law of their own genius?
